AMBOY – In the biggest games, rarely are there ever highlights of special teams
success.
Friday night's Big Rivers Conference tilt between Amboy/LaMoille and Bureau Valley
had plenty of it. Amboy punter/kicker Taylor Doege made five boots that landed within
10 yards from the endzone, and had a key 30-yard field goal that put his Clippers up
23-14, which was the final score.
After Amboy (3-0 Big Rivers) went three-and-out leading 20-14 in the fourth quarter,
Doege made a 40-yard kick to the Storm four-yard line, where the Clippers swept
around to prevent a touchback. The Storm (2-1) didn't go anywhere and punted to their
own 30. It was Doege's second punt beyond the five-yard line, the first coming toward
the end of the first half.
“The first one we had pretty good blocking,” said Doege. “They got through more than I
expected, but I barely got that one off. The second one they blocked really well, and
that allowed me to get a good punt off.
“I was hoping for that roll at the end, sitting there going towards the goal line and I'm
saying 'go left, go left,' and I saw it roll out of bounds, and I'm like 'Yes!'”
The Clippers managed to get fifteen more yards before calling on Doege to kick the
field goal to make it a two-score game with 7:33 left.
“Special teams were a big deal in this game,” said Clipper quarterback Steven Apple.
“Doege hit a perfect field goal there to make it a two-score game. That was what sealed
the deal right there: a perfect kick and some perfect punts right there.”
It's a moment a kicker hopes doesn't happen, but can execute when needed.
“It would be nice, but I hope it doesn't come down to that,” said Doege. “Hopefully we
can get a better lead. But if it comes down to that, I'd like to make them.”
Amboy usually takes to the ground for yardage, but their running game was
overshadowed by not only their special teams, but also the passing game as well. All
three of Amboy's touchdowns came on passing plays.
Apple and C.J. Sheilds connected on the Clippers' first series in the game with a 41-
yard straightaway completion to Sheilds capping off a 90-yard series.
“On film we saw a few spots in which we could get in some passing plays,” said Apple.
“We went ahead and used them and they worked tonight.”
The Storm's first series started strong, with Michael Weidner running for 36 yards on
three plays to set up a first-and-ten at the Clipper 34. However, the Storm's passing
game failed to click on the next three plays and they turned the ball over at the Clipper
31. That set up a long series in which another Apple-Sheilds touchdown completion
occurred – this time from 23 yards out.
“It was all team,” said Sheilds. “We had a good line, and they held up. He just put it right
on the money and I was there. I was just lucky to read the safety, and just went inside. I
just got to get that job done.”
Westin Montavon caught a 22-yard pass from Apple for a score with 7:33 left in the first
half, and the Storm found themselves in a quick 20-0 hole at the end of one half.
Bureau Valley's two scores came in each quarter of the second half. John King
connected with Franklin on a shotgun formation for 25 yards with 7:32 left in the third
quarter. Weidner scored with 9:38 left in the game on a 20-yard run. That was followed
by a successful two-point conversion from King to Tanner Schoff.
“I think we wanted to play in the second half,” said Bureau Valley coach Jeff Ohlson,
whose team entered the game ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 2A poll.
“The first half we had adversity, and we didn't handle it very well.”
Apple passed for 149 yards, going eight-for-12. Cody Richardson led the Clippers with
90 yards rushing on 26 carries, with Sheilds leading the receiving corps with 96 yards.
“We had to get it done,” said Apple. “This is the No. 1 team in the state. They play hard,
they play good. To stop them we need to throw the ball a bit. The first one took the wind
out of them.”
“It's tremendous,” said Sheilds. “We had so much adrenaline going into this game. We
felt like we could run through brick walls when we came out. We let up a little bit in the
second half because we were lazy and sloppy, but we stepped up and got everything
done.”
Weidner led the Storm with 125 yards rushing on 19 carries, while Franklin passed for
107 yards, going seven-for-16.
“We didn't do anything different with (Weidner), we made the commitment to do the
things we needed to do,” said Ohlson. “We did that in the second half, and didn't do
that in the first. I thought Michael played real well. We give him the ball because he's
put in the time and work and has done the things we needed him to do. We just didn't
do a good job – everybody – in the first half: all 11 on offense and 11 on defense, we
didn't execute.”
Amboy will take on Erie/Prophetstown for a road game next week. Bureau Valley will
look to rebound against St. Bede.
“We just got to understand that you got to play four quarters of football,” said Ohlson.
“We talked to them over and over about that. Maybe it takes a loss to get them to
realize that you can't just show up and expect to play and turn the switch on and off, it
has to be a consistent effort all the way through.”
The Amboy Rowboats won the fresh-soph game by the score of 34-8 to improve to 3-0
on the year.
