JOLIET – Out of 153 teams competing in the IHSA Class 3A Baseball postseason, only
two teams were left standing on Saturday afternoon.
DeKalb was one of them.
The Barbs had a remarkable postseason run: avenging an earlier loss against Sterling to
win the Regional, upsetting Aurora Marmion to win the Sectional and beating such
established programs like Galesburg at the Supersectional and Woodstock Marian in the
semifinal to reach the Class 3A title game.
However, all good things must come to an end.
DeKalb's final game of the year wasn't like their most recent. Chatham Glenwood also
rolled into the Class 3A title game after putting up a 17-5 run-rule win over Joliet Catholic
in the semifinal. The Barbs also felt the explosive offense of the Titans as they fell 11-1 in
six innings at the title game at Silver Cross Field.
Buzzsaws aside, the Barbs were simply grateful for experiencing one remarkable ride to
the final game of the Class 3A season.
“It shows us that we have to work hard every year,” said Barb sophomore Kevin Sullivan.
“At the beginning of the year, not a lot of us thought we would be here. We worked hard.
We did it.”
The trip is truly one to remember.
“It's been an amazing experience,” said Barb starting pitcher Ben Dallesasse. “It's helped
me grow as a baseball player and a person. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.”
“The experience – like Ben said – I wouldn't trade it for anything, just knowing what it was
like to hit here,” DeKalb junior Luke Hayes said. “We just got to know how hard we worked
this year. We deserved a lot of what we got.”
Marian put up four runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the
seventh inning to create the run-rule situation if the Barbs couldn't score two runs in their
half of the sixth inning.
Trent Sopko led off the sixth inning for the Barbs having reached first on a bean. He stole
second base during the at-bat of Kevin Sullivan. Glenwood pitcher Phil Maton (11-1)
struck out Sullivan and Jake Lemay before Dallesasse came up to the plate. Dallesasse
hit a pop-up to Glenwood shortstop Jake Fulks, who lost the ball in the sun. Sopko,
running full speed across the bases in the two-out situation, reached home just after the
ball landed on the ground.
Dallesasse was left stranded at first base as Frank Petras hit a pop-up to Glenwood right
fielder Chris Sekardi to end the game.
Glenwood scored the first four runs of the game all on RBI hits. Sekardi and Michael
Fiaush had RBI singles, and Fulks drove both of them in with a two-RBI double.
“We played a team that hit the ball real well,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. I don't think
we played our best ballgame, obviously. (Glenwood) did a real good job hitting the ball.”
DeKalb had a chance to score in the fourth inning. Sullivan led off the inning with a single
to center field. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lemay. After that,
Dallesasse hit a single to left field. Keck was waving Sullivan around third, but then held
up his hands to signal a stop just after Sullivan crossed third. However, Sullivan did not
see the sign and was out at the plate with little trouble.
“I was waving for him to come real hard,” Keck said. “Their left fielder (Fiaush) got to the
ball in a hurry. I went to put the hands up, and Kevin was dead set on trying to score. He
didn't pick it up in time, and by the time he realized that it was up, it was too late to stop
and try to go back.”
Glenwood continued its offensive barrage with an RBI single by Jake Lance and an RBI
double by Dallas Henderson in the fifth inning. The Titans drove in runs in the sixth by
hitting a cycle of sorts: Maton had an RBI single, Jacob Reese an RBI double, Jake Ingold
an RBI triple, and Lance hit a two-run home run across the left field wall.
The Titans scored runs when they desperately needed to. All of their runs came with two
out.
“It’s probably the best baseball we played all year. Everybody hit this weekend. We played
great defense, the pitchers pitched really well. We played awesome,” Reese said. “It
seemed like everybody was hitting today. Once we got two outs, that’s when we were
scoring. And Lance hit a shot, and that kind of was a great ending point on our season.”
Maton gave up only four Barb hits in the game in going the distance. He struck out nine
and did not walk anyone. Nearly a quarter of his pitches (82) were strikes (61).
“About the fourth inning I was throwing a lot of pitches, and it seemed like they were
having a hard time making contact,” Maton said. “And the off speed was just working a lot
better.”
Dallesasse, who had the only multiple hit game for the Barbs, scattered 12 Glenwood hits.
He struck out four, walked one, and gave up nine runs before giving way to Blaine
Pearson, who gave up Maton's RBI single and the Lance home run.
“This late in the year, my arm, it didn’t seem like it had as much zip as it usually had, and it
took them a while to figure out what I was doing,” Dallesasse said. “They’re a good ball
team, they can hit the ball, and my hat goes off to them.”
“With everything that was going on (with yesterday's lineup changes) in having to go with
Jake Lemay yesterday and have Ben catch so much kind of took a little bit out of his legs,”
Keck said. “He didn't have his best stuff with his fastball and his off-speed pitches.”
DeKalb will lose six seniors, five of which started today. Dallesasse, Lemay, Petras, Trevor
Burdick, Travis Jones and Adam Swinehart have all graduated from high school.
“No. 2 in the state is not bad at all,” said Dallesasse.
The Barbs will also be needing a new coach for next year. Keck will become DeKalb's
assistant athletics director next year. After going 20-73 in his first three years as coach,
Keck guided the Barbs to a winning season (18-16) last year.
“The experience for me has been unreal,” Keck said. “We set our goals and we set them
high. This year we set them extremely high, and that was to be playing today. We reached
that goal. My hope is that in the future the program will continue to sustain this. I'm hoping
that next year they can build upon this, and if they make it back and win it all, that would
be a great thing.”
