PEARL CITY -
When a team can’t score runs, it doesn’t matter how good its pitcher is.

Somonauk freshman hurler Jessica Schultz was pretty darn good for most of her time in
the circle as she and her teammates battled Forreston on Saturday during the Class 1A
Pearl City Sectional Championship.

Schultz limited the Lady Cardinals to a mere two hits, while striking out twelve on the day.

But Forreston made the most of one of those base knocks and took full advantage of five
Schultz walks and the poor Somonauk run support to come away with a 3-1 sectional
championship victory. It was Forreston’s first sectional softball crown in school history,
while the Lady Bobcats fell in the title game for the second straight season.

The Lady Cardinals (25-13) will move on to the Class 1A Orion Supersectional in Orion on
Monday against Alexis United, while Somonauk (24-7) ends another stellar campaign.

“This one hurts. It was just one of those low scoring games where Forreston managed to
score more runs without getting many hits,” said Somonauk co-head softball coach Scott
Siuda. “What more could you ask of Jess? Yeah, she had a couple more walks than
normal, but I couldn’t have been prouder of her effort today and throughout the season
and the playoffs. We just didn’t give her any support on the scoreboard. If you can’t score
runs, you won’t get the “W” and we didn’t today.”

“She (Schultz) brought the heat today. You could tell that she wanted it bad. But we
expected her to be tough,” said Forreston head coach Paul Everding. “We weren’t going
to be intimidated though. I thought we were patient and worked her for some big walks.
But overall, we had to get the runs that we did because she kept us off balance most of
the time. She pitched a heck of a game.”

As did Forreston starting pitcher Alyssa Edler (7 ip, 1 run, 6 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts). The
junior right-hander set down the first six batters she faced. She also scored the Lady
Cardinals first run in the second inning.

With one out, Schultz issued her first walk to Edler who then stole second base three
pitches later.

With two outs, Renita Crusey struck out swinging, but the ball got away from Somonauk
catcher Sam Croy and bounded toward the first base dugout. Edler came around from
second to score on the weird play, while Crusey checked in at first safely and Forreston
led 1-0.

“I knew the ball went by their catcher and I just kept running,” Edler said. “That was a key
moment because that first run really got us energized and we really seemed to stay up the
rest of the game.”

The Lady Cardinals would make it 3-0 in the sixth. After Schultz surrendered walks to Alex
Ludwig and Edler, Holly Kortemeier laced her team’s second and last hit down the right
field line just out of the grasp of Somonauk outfielder Hillary Paull for a double. Ludwig
and Edler scored easily and the momentum was with Forreston.

“Their pitcher is very, very good. She hit her locations very well today and really had me
off balance my first two at bats,” Kortemeier said. “I was waiting for a pitch in my sweet
spot and it just happened to be there. Their right fielder was charging hard and I was
hoping she wouldn’t get to it because she made a great catch right before that. But it
worked out for us.”

“Hillary made an excellent grab earlier to save a couple of runs but the double was just
out of her reach,” Siuda said. “She came into the dugout and thought if she could have
just jumped for it she might have caught it. But she gave it everything she could on that
play.”

The Lady Cats would score their only run of the game off Edler in the bottom of the sixth.
Hillary Paull tripled and scored on Lauren Brummel’s single to right field to cut the gap to
3-1. But Edler set Somonauk down one-two-three in the seventh to end a strong season
for the Lady Bobcats and giving her squad its first ever sectional championship.

“It’s unbelievable for us to have come this far from just a couple of years ago when I was a
freshman. We were 5-20 back then and now in my junior year we’re 25-13. It’s amazing. I
still can’t believe we’re sectional champs. It’s just great,” Edler said.

Freshman Ashlee Kawall had another fine game for Somonauk going 2-for-3 at the plate,
while Hillary Paull was also 2-for-3. Schultz ended the four-game post season with a
whopping total of 49 strikeouts and only eight walks. She also finished 2010 with a final
overall pitching record of 23-5.

“We couldn’t have asked more from this bunch of girls and especially Jessica (Schultz).
We rode her arm all year long. She was just fantastic as were all the girls,” said
Somonauk co-head coach Darvil Hayes. “It’s tough to lose two years in a row in the
sectional championship game, but we couldn’t be prouder of this group of kids.”

For the Lady Cardinals it’s on to the Supersectionals against United, runners up the last
two seasons to 1A champion Cobden.

“It’s going to be tough. We know it won’t be a cakewalk. But this win today against a great
pitcher and a great Somonauk team will give us some excellent confidence,” Everding
said. “Our intention is to come out Monday with confidence, relax, play as hard as we can,
and hopefully win ourselves a trip to the finals.”
