throws in Illinois.

HANOVER –
For eight consecutive seasons and for 15 of the past 17 years, Oregon
dominated at the local IHSA Class A Boys Track and Field Sectional.

The Hawks were the defending 1A state champions, up until Thursday at River Ridge High
School where Winnebago made sure that there would be no 2010 sectional or state title
for Oregon.

Starting off with five impressive individual field event championships, the Indians followed
up with five more track event crowns including the final race of the night where
Winnebago stormed from behind in the 1600-meter relay to clip Oregon and punctuate
the changing of the Northwest Illinois boys track and field guard.

Winnebago scored 188 points to Oregon's 69.50 points. Byron finished in third with 60
points, while Polo was fourth with 40 and Galena/East Dubuque/River Ridge checked in
fifth with 36.

With the win, the Indians laid claim to the River Ridge sectional title plaque, ten out of 18
event championships, and a trip to Charleston on May 27-29 as a team to compete for the
Class 1A title.

Winnebago assistant coach Steve Scheider was subbing on Thursday for head coach Joe
Erb, who is at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this weekend with the Lady Indians
track and field state qualifiers. Scheider believes that the sectional championship was a
true team effort.

“The kids really showed well today. The one thing coach Erb instills in these kids is
compete, compete, compete. It was a great day for our program,” Scheider said.

The Indians got things started in field events before they even got off the bus. On
Wednesday at Freeport, Nathan Rittmeyer (13’05.00) captured the pole vault over
Oregon’s Austin McCourt (12’03.00).

“We stepped off the bus with 16 points before we even started today, so it was pretty nice
knowing we were on top of the scoreboard,” Scheider said. “It just kept getting better from
there especially with Alex Thompson in the shot and the discus.”

Thompson showed why he’s a threat to win both of the throwing events for Winnebago at
Charleston next weekend.

In the discus, he uncorked an unbelievable throw of 201’06.00 to register a personal best.
Four other throwers qualified in discus as Justin Hughes (157’11.00) of Galena, A.J.
Thomas (153’10.00) of Winnebago, Andrew Sandahl (147’11.00) of Lena-Winslow and
Jake Peterson (146’08.00) of Polo all bested the state qualifying mark of 143 feet.

But it was Thompson that blew away both throwing fields. He had a personal best in
winning the shot put (58’01.50) over surprise freshman O’Shay Smith (50’04.75) of Le-
Win and Thomas (49’08.50). Both Smith and Thomas qualified for state as well.

“This year’s a little different for me because last year I was pretty much concentrating on
the discus. But now I know I’m competitive in both events,” Thompson said. “Today was
great because I had personal bests in both and hopefully I can go to Charleston next
weekend and compete well for two state championships.”

Before the field events were over, Winnebago added its fifth individual championship as
Tay Shanklin (43’02.00) bested Brendan Walters (41’04.00) of Byron in the triple jump.

Byron (8:23.70) set its team best with a win in the 4x800 meter relay over Oregon (8:
27.00). Then the Indians (43.60) captured their first track relay title in the 4x100 meter
event over Byron (44.00) before the individual finals began with some sprint racing. It was
there that the track was reversed in favor of a strong tail wind that aided in getting a large
number of competitors to Charleston.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Oregon’s Jeff Wehmhoefer (14.40) tallied his personal best in
winning the event over four other state qualifiers. Nick Huftalin (15.00) of Winnebago,
Ryan Stakenberh (15.10) of Forreston, Ethan Baisden (15.10) of West Carroll, and Kai
McNeely (15.20) of Galena will all go to Charleston next weekend along with Wehmhoefer.

“The wind really helped, but something really clicked with me today,” Wehmhoefer said. “I
stink at starting, but my strength is when we really get going and I get into a rhythm. Once
I find that rhythm I push and push until I get to the finish line.”

In the 100-meter dash, all eight finalists qualified for state below the eleven-second
benchmark. Jeremiah Ludwig (10.50) of Polo set a new personal standard in winning over
state qualifiers Neal Leonard (10.51) and Marcus Posley (10.70) Winnebago, Quinn Haus
(10.70) of Le-Win, Andrew Clark (10.71) of Byron, Denzel Woods (10.80) of South Beloit,
Jonny Balsman (10.81) of Rockford Lutheran, and Evan Dornink (10.90) of Dakota.

“It was a nice back wind behind us today. I came out of the blocks slow, but that always
gives me my urge to win and my will to fight,” Ludwig said. “Man, I’m looking forward to
going to Charleston again. It’s always a good time, the time of my life.”

More wind-aided sprint race success came from Milledgeville/Eastland’s Kevin Glastetter
in the 400- and 200-meter dashes. Glastetter (49.30) set a personal best in winning the
400 over qualifiers Jake Lytle (49.80) of Amboy and Mike Gallagher (50.30) of Rockford
Lutheran. He then followed that up by finishing second in the 200 with another personal
best of 22.00 behind Winnebago’s Michael Mann who won with a time of 21.60.

The Indians crowning glory and the exclamation point of the meet would come in the last
event of the evening.

Winnebago trailed behind Oregon in the 1600-meter relay when Posley took the baton
from teammate Tyler Busch for the final leg. Posley quickly made up valued ground and
overtook Oregon anchor man Ryan Creegan down the stretch as Winnebago captured
the race and cemented their sectional championship with a time of 3:27.80 over 3:28.30
for Oregon.

Now it’s off to Charleston for the Indians.

“I wasn’t sure whether I had much in the tank coming into the four-by-four hundred. But I
got fired up and knew I had a chance to catch them with ten meters to go,” Posley said. “I’
m glad I had such a good leg and I’m even gladder that we won the race and won the
sectional championship. We want to be the first Winnebago team to ever win state in
Charleston. It’s a great feeling to know we’ve got a great shot after today.”
