It was no secret going into the battle between Hinckley-Big Rock and Kaneland on
Wednesday April 28 that offense would come at a premium price.
Both girls soccer programs have played at the top of their respective defensive games so
far in 2010 with the Lady Royals allowing only nine goals in 14 games while the Lady
Knights have given up a mere eleven tallies throughout 13 contests.
So one might figure something had to give. Well it didn’t.
In a tight marking, physically demanding contest that was played predominantly between
the 18-yard lines, both H-BR and Kaneland fought to a 0-0 scoreless tie at Hinckley.
Each ballclub carried only one loss coming into the showdown as the Class 1A power
Lady Royals now move to an overall record of 12-1-2, while the 2A titan Lady Knights add
another digit to their far right column moving to 10-1-3 currently.
“It was a physical game on both parts. We enjoyed that and we needed that to get back
our edge,” said H-BR coach Paul Taeuber. “I think we showed that we had that resiliency
to cover what they gave us, but also to push forward in our objectives.”
“I’m a little disappointed in our play, but give it to H-BR for playing tough. We just didn’t
possess the ball like we normally do,” said Kaneland coach Scott Parillo. “Credit H-BR for
nice physical play that got us out of our game a little bit. My hats off to them. I think they’re
going to go pretty far in 1A.”
H-BR had the best of the chances during the first 40 minutes of play, but never came very
close to testing Kaneland goalkeeper Jordan Ginther. Lady Royals forward Maxzine
Rossler would attempt four corner kicks in the first half, but only one got put on net.
Meanwhile, the Lady Knights were equally unsuccessful against H-BR keeper Jessica
Leifheit. But they also had the only true scoring chance of the half.
At 9:55, Sophie Blank took a beautiful pass from Emily Heimerdinger, but she missed wide
left with a point blank shot from 15 yards out.
Other than that, the first half was truly a defensive struggle with both clubs trying to find a
way to mount any significant scoring threat.
“We didn’t put it down in the corners enough and run on it in the first half. I felt we could
beat them all day on the outside,” Parillo said. “We had it all day on the outside. For some
reason we decided we didn’t want to do that anymore. But it’s another learning experience
for the kids.
Kaneland controlled the play for the better part of the second half moving the ball well in
H-BR territory. But Lady Royal sweeper Heather Weissinger made some great plays to
turn possible Lady Knight scoring chances into harmless initial runs before eventually
clearing the ball.
“Heather does a fantastic job defensively. She’s got great side-to-side movement. Ever
since we moved her to that position last year, we’ve done extremely well defensively,”
Taeuber said.
Rossler had H-BR’s best scoring chance of the second half at the 17:50 mark, but missed
a shot on Ginther from ten yards out.
“I was on the left side and the ball was right there. But I had a girl on my hip so I couldn’t
really get a good shot off,” Rossler said. “There was a lot of defensive commotion all
around. Nobody could finish anything tonight.”
The Lady Knights had one more shot with 40 seconds to go as the ball bounded around
in the H-BR box. But Leifheit came away with a leaping grab to snatch away one of the
only true scoring chances on the night for Kaneland as the defensive battle came to a
scoreless end.
“I prefer these games to blowouts because adversity is good especially when we’re
heading into the playoffs. I sure wish we would have won though,” Parillo said.
“I don’t know if this game had the atmosphere that we had hoped. It didn’t start off very
intense like you might expect,” Taeuber said. “But as the game progressed, especially in
the last 15 or 20 minutes, it was all or nothing. It was a true defensive battle.”
