Records - Marquette 20-6,
Somonauk 19-2

OTTAWA - Two of the best area Class 1A high school baseball teams hooked up in a
battle to see which could get to 20 wins first on the 2010 campaign.
Marquette and Somonauk entered Wednesdays top-tier clash at Masinelli Field in Ottawa
with 19 wins. Both schools also recently secured No. 1 seeds in their respective regional
pairing for the upcoming playoffs. It figured to be a tough battle between the small school
baseball powers.
Chalk up a hard-fought win for the Crusaders as they notched a 7-5 triumph over the
Bobcats.
Somonauk committed four errors on the day that led to three unearned runs. The Bobcats
also stranded eleven runners on base and Marquette took full advantage of both
Somonauk negatives to hit the 20-win plateau first. It was also the Crusaders 15th
consecutive victory dating back to April 10.
“The 20 wins are great, but we want more. Not to be greedy, but I don’t believe in goals
because they set you up for failure. I’ve got something else in mind besides winning 20
games,” Marquette coach Todd Hopkins said. “Today we hit some balls hard and we’ll
take it. They’re a good ballclub. Hopefully we’ll see them again down the stretch.”
“When you leave that many runners on it’s a good and bad scenario. You want runners
on and that’s the name of the game. But you’ve got to be able to drive them in. That’s just
something we struggled to do today,” Somonauk Bob Honkala said. “Errors have been a
problem. No ifs, ands or buts about it. We’ve got to make a better effort to shore up our
defense or this time of year you get beat.”
Marquette (20-6) got on the board first with a run in the opening frame off Somonauk
starting pitcher Jake Morsch. Tom Hill singled and later scored when Joey Ceja hit a
booming RBI double to centerfield to give the Cru a 1-0 lead after one.
Somonauk (19-2) would have a golden opportunity to at least tie the game in the top of
the third off Marquette starter Josiah Haines after the right-hander walked the bases full
with one out. But Haines got the next two Bobcat batters on infield outs and Somonauk
failed to dent the scoreboard.
The Cru would add another run in the bottom of the frame to go up 2-0. With one out Zak
Worsley tripled to right center. Hill then followed with a grounder to Somonauk third
baseman Danny Heerhold whom fired home to catcher Colin Stahl. Worsley slid in safely
on a close play and Marquette was up two after three.
The Bobcats would finally get to Haines whom once again walked the bases full in the top
of the fourth. Courtesy runner Dylan Wesolowski would tally on a Haines wild pitch and
Hopkins had seen enough. Haines departed in lieu of reliever Drew Gerding whom ended
the Bobcat threat with two more runners stranded and the score 2-1 in favor of the Cru.
“Haines struggled with his control. Give him credit for battling, but he didn’t have much,”
Hopkins said. “Give Gerding credit. He came in right away and got guys out in a tough
situation.”
Tanner Barra led off the Marquette half of the fourth and scored two batter later on
Gerding’s sacrifice fly to right. Jake Morsch was done on the hill and Aaron Alvarez came
on to close out the fourth for Somonauk in relief with the Cru leading 3-1.
Somonauk would pull to within one at 3-2 on Mack Land’s RBI single in the fifth. But once
again the Bobcats left the bases loaded to total ten runners ditched through five.
Marquette would add an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to go up 4-2 before
Somonauk would rattle Gerding with a three spot in the top of the sixth to take the lead at
5-4. Brock Kartheiser, Land, and Derek Morsch all had RBI during the stanza as the
Bobcats took their first lead of the ballgame. But the errors would undo Somonauk in the
bottom of the sixth. Two key miscues led to three Marquette tallies and a 7-5 advantage
for the Cru.
Worsley stroked his second triple for a run scoring hit, while Hill followed with an RBI bloop
single that scored Worsley after Alvarez was pulled in favor of Kartheiser. It proved to be
the game-winning hit.
“I know Kartheiser is a good pitcher, so I just wanted to put the ball in play,” Hill said. “He
gave me a pitch to hit. I didn’t hit it very good, but oh well. It felt great to go back up after
we fell behind.”
Hopkins then elected to bring in Mason Snyder to close out the Bobcats in the top of the
seventh. Snyder spelled Gerding in high fashion retiring Somonauk one, two, three to end
the game with the last two outs coming via strikeouts.
“I haven’t pitched in about two weeks so the arm felt real good,” Snyder said. “The biggest
thing today is that I’ve been off so long and my arm was real loose. The ball was just flying
in there. I was glad I could close it out.”
Gerding (3-1) took the win for Marquette, while Alvarez (5-1) suffered his first loss of the
season for Somonauk.
“It’s been a long time since we lost and it feels real good to beat a good team like
Somonauk,” Snyder said. “Back when we started this streak we didn’t know if we’d get
back to .500. Now hopefully we’ve got a shot of going somewhere from here.”
