EAST PEORIA – Moline's run to the IHSA Class 4A State Softball Tournament had
recently been noted for having prevailed as underdogs in the Sectional final against then-
unbeaten Normal West and Downers Grove South in the Supersectional.
The Maroons came into the semifinals of the State Tournament once again as underdogs,
this time against Southwest Suburban Conference powerhouse Orland Park Sandburg, a
team with just two losses on the season.
Only while playing at the destination the Maroons have wanted to be at all year did the
underdog finally become leashed. Holding it was Sandburg pitcher Brit Gardner, who
struck out 10 Moline batters and allowed only two hits in helping her team beat Moline 4-1
at Mizuno Field at EastSide Centre.
Gardner (18-2) went the distance for the Eagles. She also allowed only one walk and one
unearned run on the game to one of the tougher teams she's faced this year.
“When we get down here they got to be awesome, and they were,” said Gardner. “It was
always a battle pitching to them.”
Sandburg (39-2) scored the first three runs of the game off Moline starting pitcher Jordan
Kasbohm. Two of them came in the second inning. Jori Boren led off the inning with a
single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nicole Richards singled and
advanced to second to put both runners in scoring position. Boren scored on an RBI
single by Lizzie Wojtowicz. Richards would score on a passed ball later in the inning.
“In the beginning I was overthrowing too much,” Kasbohm said. “As the game went on I
kept telling myself 'relax,' and the more relaxed, we were holding them better.”
The third-inning run came with the bases loaded. Jess Perkins, who led off the inning with
a single, scored from third base after a pickoff throw went awry. Sandburg's final run of
the game was in the seventh inning when Karissa Kouchis, pinch running after Lexi
Bryant's double, scored from third base after a throwing error by Knary at left field. The
late-game charge was almost similar to their win over Oak Park and River Forest High at
the Supersectional where they won 1-0 late.
“We've always been that team where it's like up-and-down,” Sandburg coach Jim
Fabianski said. We're jumping on people early and then just taking it easy, or scoring way
late. Today we did both.”
The lone run for Moline (28-9) came in the third inning thanks to the speed of Stacey
Rettig. Down 3-0, Rettig hit a one-out single, and stole second base in the next at-bat.
After Kaitlyn Knary's third-strike call went past the catcher, Rettig advanced to third. As
the strikeout-putout throw came to first base, Rettig dashed safely for home.
The run didn't seem to deter Gardner, who retired 16 of the last 17 batters.
“We came up there and scored one run, but when you come to state, that's not good
enough,” Kasbohm said. “You keep going and keep scoring more and get those
insurance runs.”
Moline's chances at a comeback were, appropriately, in the seventh inning. A couple of
cracks at the bat landed elsewhere in the outfield for they Maroons. Cleanup hitter Lillie
Stone hit a line drive straight at Eagle left fielder A.J. Grigsby. After Olivia Aten struck out
for the second out, Kayla Behrens hit a line drive to right field, where it landed just in the
reach of the Eagles' Kelly Sheridan for the final out.
“The team does an amazing job for me in the field and (now) I have to do the job,"
Gardner said. “We knew Moline was a great team, otherwise they wouldn't be here. We
had to fight for every inch.”
Moline's only other hit was a double by Aten.
“They hit the ball and we didn't,” said Moline coach Mark Gerlach. “We've been on a roll
hitting the ball, and we only had two hits tonight. You've got to tip your hat to their pitcher
and their team.”
Kasbohm (18-7) went the distance in the loss, her third at the State Softball Tournament
in her career (the other two coming last year for West Carroll), allowing four runs (two
earned), striking out four and walking two. She also had a rough time getting calls on her
corner pitches, which led to increased frustration on the mound. She allowed a Class 4A-
record 12 hits. Bryant went three-for-three and Grigsby andMorgan Biel had multiple-hit
games for the Eagles.
“They're just a really good hitting team,” Kasbohm said. “They hit as a whole. My pitching
wasn't really on tonight, and there's nothing I can do about that.”
Sandburg will play in the Class 4A championship game against Palatine Fremd, 4-1
winners over Elk Grove Village. The Grenaders will be Moline's next opponent, with the
game beginning at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
“I don't think we'll have a problem rebounding tomorrow,” Gerlach said. “We only have two
seniors (Stone and Aten), we have a bunch of young kids with a lot of energy and
enthusiasm. We'll be ready to play.”
