PLANO -
After Plano’s surprising 6-2 Interstate Eight Conference win over Sandwich on
Monday, a lot of high school baseball fans on Route 34 were wondering whether the
Reapers could capture the annual two game rivalry with a back to back sweep of the
Indians.

Plano has been struggling with its only win so far in I-8 play coming against Sandwich,
while the Indians are on top of the Interstate Eight North Division despite the loss to the
Reapers.

So the second half of the home-and-home Tuesday at Plano would either provide more
surprise for the Reapers or a measure of payback for the Indians.

Chalk one up for the latter and then some.

Sandwich pounded out a prodigious 23 runs on 17 hits on its way to a whopping 23-9
victory over a shell-shocked Plano. The huge rebound win following the Monday loss
keeps the Indians atop the I-8 North with a 9-3 mark. Sandwich also raised its overall
record to 15-11. Plano fell to 7-21 overall and 1-10 in conference.

“It’s good for our guys to bounce back. I think everyone was pretty upset after yesterday’s
loss. But give Plano credit. They played a great game yesterday with no errors and their
pitcher went after us. Tip your cap to them,” said Sandwich coach Derek Avery. “But today
we had to come back and get on them early and take the wind out of their sails. We had a
big first inning and that set the tone for the rest of the day.”

“You’ve got to credit Sandwich. They were sure ready to play today, no doubt about it.
They didn’t like the fact that we beat them yesterday and they came out, played a very
good ballgame and scored a ton of runs,” said Plano coach D.J. Cocks. “We did a lot of
things wrong especially early in this game, but Sandwich did a lot of things right and really
took it to us from the get go.”

The Indians got to Plano starting pitcher Jake Wade with eight runs on only three hits in
the top of the first inning. Wade was off target, issuing five walks, hitting one batter and
throwing three wild pitches. He faced only 10 batters before being replaced by Will Brown
with only one out. Brown retired the next two of three hitters, but Sandwich was up big
early 8-0.

“Jake (Wade) came back today in only his second start since being injured and gave
everything he had. It’s his senior year and maybe he was a little too amped up playing
Sandwich and all,” Cocks said. “He just didn’t have it today on the mound, but he helped
us at the plate. Nobody’s looking bad at him. It just wasn’t his day pitching.”

Wade got the Reapers on the board with an RBI double off Sandwich starter Preston
Frieders to make the score 8-1 after one. But Sandwich would up the margin to 13-1 with
a five-run second inning. The big blow in the inning coming off the bat of Kaleb Strothman
whom measured Brown for a three-run bomb to left-center field where the Plano
outfielders never moved an inch.

“I just went to bat, saw the ball well belt high, and just reared back and went for it,”
Strothman said. “It was a good day all around when everyone seemed to be clicking. We
were all a little ticked off after yesterday and came back today with a big win.”

Two more would come in the top of the third off Brown as Josh Fischbach stroked a two
run single to put the Indians up 15-1.

After Plano closed the gap to 15-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third, Sandwich
chased Brown a half inning later with six more runs courtesy of Frieders two run double,
Bryan Lopez’ two run single, an RBI from Justin Wegener and yet another run scoring hit
from Fischbach. Sandwich led 21-3 after three and a half innings of play.

“I was mad last night and this morning and just wanted to come out today and really take it
to them,” Fischbach said. “We did it in a big way today after a bad game on Monday.”

Plano did manage to touch Frieders with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Angel
Castellanos stroked a two run double and Wade added a two run single to make the
score 21-7.

But the Indians took advantage of two Reaper errors and got to sophomore reliever Devin
Haws with two unearned runs to move the total to 23-7. Plano would add two runs (one
earned) in the bottom of the fifth, but it would be way too little too late as Sandwich won by
14 via the five-inning mercy rule.

Frieders (4-0) got the complete game victory for the Indians, while Wade (2-3) took the
loss for the Reapers.

Offensively Fischbach, Lorensten, Ryan Benedetti, Mike Considine, and Justin Wegener
all had multiple hit games for Sandwich. Castellanos paced Plano going 4-4 with two RBI
and three runs scored, while Johnny Mendez was 3-4 with three runs scored and Wade
was 2-4 with three RBI. Haws also had two hits and two runs scored for the Reapers.

With the win Sandwich remains atop the I-8 North standing by one game over Lisle with
four left to play.

“There’s still a long way to go and we’ve got to take them one at a time. This was a big win
over Plano, but we still have four big conference ballgames left,” Avery said. “We’ve put
ourselves in a good position to have an opportunity to make a run at our half of the
conference. We’ll see what happens next week.
