SENECA - After a rather demoralizing twelve-run
loss to Wilmington on Wednesday, the Sandwich
baseball squad rebounded in grand style just a day
later.
Behind two homers and a double from University of
Alabama-Birmingham recruit Matt Morse and a solo
shot and a two-bagger from Robert Morris-bound
Josh Fischbach, the Indians came alive for an 11-4
win over the Fighting Irish on Thursday.
The win concluded the 2010 Interstate Eight
Conference season for Sandwich as it finished with
an 11-5 record. The Indians now must wait to see
the result of Friday’s game between Lisle and
Herscher. A loss for Lisle would drop them into an
identical tie with Sandwich for the overall I-8 North
Division Championship. A win for Lisle would result
in a 12-4 finishing record and an outright
championship.

Also in the mix could be Coal City. The Coalers will play host to Manteno on Friday and a
win would put their record at 11-5 for a possible three-way share of the title.
“We needed to get the win today. Now obviously we’re going to need some help from
Herscher. If there’s a team in out conference I’m looking for help from it’s them,” said
Sandwich coach Derek Avery. “I’m proud of these guys. To finish 11-5 in this conference
is always good. We swung the bats much better today than we did against Wilmington. We
followed up a rough game with a real strong one. I’m pretty pleased.”
Sandwich (17-13) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off Seneca starting
pitcher T.J. Lindsey. With two out, Jake Wegener doubled and went to third on a wild
pitch. He then scored on Elliott Lorensten’s infield hit.
They would plate three more in the top of the third as Fischbach led off with a laser beam
solo homer to left field to make the tally 2-0.
“I was down 0-2 and I thought it night be a tough at bat. But he (Lindsey) threw one right
down the middle and I just hit it over. It felt good,” Fischbach said.
One out later Morse doubled, stole third and eventually scored on an error to put the
Indians up 3-0. Jake Wegener the added an RBI single to score Mike Considine whom
reached on the error and Sandwich led 4-0 through two and a half innings.
Seneca (9-21, 3-12 IEC) would tally its first run off Sandwich starter Preston Frieders in
the bottom of the third to cut the margin to 4-1. Josh Higgins doubled to right scoring Pat
Ugolini whom had reached second on a two base Indian error.
Sandwich fired right back in the top of the fourth with two runs. Fischbach led off with a
double and scored one out later as Morse hit his first homer of the day over the left field
fence to give the Indians a 6-1 lead.
“Today we really wanted to get out there and grab an early lead and try and build on it
later in the game,” Morse said. “It was frustrating against Wilmington yesterday. But today
we got started well and I was glad I could contribute to that good start.”
The Irish would touch Frieders for two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two run double
by Aaron Smrekar. That made the score 6-3 after four frames but Sandwich was far from
through.
They’d chase Lindsey with a four spot in the top of the sixth to go up 10-3. Justin
Wegener stroked a two-run single followed by RBI from Tony Warpecha and Frieders as
the Indians were just about to deliver the knockout punch.
But that wouldn’t come until the seventh inning after Seneca’s Jake Condon took Frieders
deep to left for a solo blast in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Irish to within a half dozen
at 10-4.
Then the crowning blow as Morse concluded his great day at the plate with a solo bomb in
the final frame off Seneca reliever Andy Dunn. The Indians owned a seven-run lead and
would close out the game with Frieders getting the victory. He moved to a perfect 5-0 on
the year with a little help in the bottom of the seventh from reliever Matt Anthenat.
Frieders allowed four runs on ten hits striking out eight and walking four.
“We needed him (Frieders) to go deep into this game. He went out today and threw
strikes. He got his breaking ball around the plate and he never really backed down,”
Avery said. “They hit him today, but he kept coming at them and did a great job.”
Lindsey (1-4) took the loss for Seneca allowing nine runs on nine hits, while striking out
five and walking six.
“Congratulations to Sandwich. They’ve done a nice job this year,” Seneca coach Kirk
Houchin said. “This is one of the most solid Sandwich teams I’ve seen in a long time. We
gave them everything we had but we just couldn’t stay with them today.”
