SENECA - It was a banner night for several area schools and the many track and field
athletes that took part in the Seneca Irish Invitational on Friday.
Better than 700 descended on in the 16 team, 36-event co-ed meet which crowned
eleven NISB competitors as individual champions and Genoa-Kingston High School as the
overall boys team kingpin.
All in all, eight area teams were represented. Those squads produced a stunning top
three finish in all but three of the 36 events coming out of either individual or team
competition.
The following is a recap of the eleven NISB champions and their individual events along
with a look at the Cogs big win as the boys top team contingent at Seneca.
NISB Girls Individual Champions
Jenna Thorp – Hinckley Big Rock, Shot Put - Most of the area knows Thorp as a member
of the two-time Class 1A state champion Lady Royals in girls basketball. But Thorp can
also throw the shot put and she proved it in a big way at Seneca. Thorp edged out Liana
Beauchamp of Genoa-Kingston with a throw of 34’00.50” to capture the first championship
medal awarded during the competition.
“My goal today was 34 feet and I was happy to get it. I tried to keep busy until my turn by
running some laps and I was able to get my momentum going,” Thorp said. “I found that
made the difference for me today instead of sitting around and watching. It was nice to win
today.”
Mary Ellen Spika – Marquette, 3200-Meter Run - Spika grabbed control of this race with
two laps to go and never looked back besting the field in a time of 12:24.119, some 18
seconds ahead of her closest competitor. The time also was Spika’s personal best.
“I’m really proud of myself because my previous PR was 12:32 and I just wanted to be
under that,” Spika said. “One of my friends set a goal for me to get 12:26, so I guess I
beat that too. This is my first year running track and I’m glad I was able to do my best.”
Alyssa Applebee – Seneca, Pole Vault - The diminutive sophomore shattered the meet
record by jumping 9’6.00” exactly one foot better than the previous mark of 8’6” that was
shared by two past competitors. Applebee outdistanced teammate Madison Warning who
placed second at 9’0.00” and Haley Fischer of Genoa-Kingston who placed third at 8’
06.00”.
“Last year I got ten feet at conference and at state and today I only got to 9’6” so this
wasn’t my best jump,” Applebee said. “But I feel good about winning here. My next goal is
to get to 10’6” or eleven feet.”
Courtney Helms – Seneca, Long Jump - The Irish crowned their second champion as
Helms captured the long jump with a leap of 15’09.50”. It was a scant inch and a half
better than the jump of Corinne Benson of Coal City who finished second at 15’08.00”
Lizzy Urbina – Plano, 400-Meter Dash - Urbina quickly made up the stagger and ran away
with an impressive 400-meter championship time of 1:03.454. Even more remarkable was
the fact that Urbina had helped her squad grab second place in the 800-meter relay just
moments before she competed for the 400 crown.
“I was very tired because I had just run the 4 by 200 right before and as I was running the
400, I forgot to breathe,” Urbina said. “I put it out of my mind and when I crossed the finish
line I was dizzy and then fell on the ground. Obviously I was okay, but it’s funny now. At
least I still won.”
NISB Boys Individual Champions
J.J. Cannon – Plano, Long Jump - Cannon continues to build on his three-sport legacy at
Plano by winning the long jump with a leap of 20’02.75”. Not only is he an All-Conference
Interstate Eight football player and a state champion wrestler, but Cannon now can add a
big field event win to his expansive athletic resume.
“My first two jumps weren’t too good. But after that I got my 20 footer,” Cannon said. “I’m
pretty happy with the result because it was my personal best.”
Brad Hoffman of Sandwich finished third with a jump of 19’10.25”.
Ronnie Sribniak – Genoa-Kingston, Pole Vault - The Cogs team championship run got
started when Sribniak easily won the pole vault with a mark of 13’00.00”. Cassidy Warning
of Seneca was second at 12’06.00”, while teammate Matt Holley came in third at 11’06.00”.
“I was trying for 14 feet with a new pole that wasn’t everything I wanted it to be. But I still
was pretty happy with the win,” Sribniak said. “Last year I lost by one scratch so I know I
had to win it in my senior year.”
Joseph Jones – Plano 110M Hurdles - The Reapers sophomore sensation upset favorite
Drake Stuedemann of Seneca with a time of 15.279 to 15.31. Earlier in the semifinal
heats, Stuedemann had bested Jones. Brandon Forrest of Marquette finished third at
16.329.
“I was a lot happier after the final than I was after the prelims. He (Stuedemann) has been
beating me since my freshman year so I’ve been kind of mad about it,” Jones said. “I just
put the first race out of my mind and concentrated on winning the final. It’s a great feeling.”
Drake Stuedemann – Seneca, 300M Intermediate Hurdles - After losing out to Jones in
the 110M hurdles and finishing second in the 100 meter dash, Stuedemann was seeing
red as he blazed to the 300M championship with a time of 40.139. Brandon Forrest of
Marquette was second at 42.714 and Mike Stone of Sandwich checked in third at 43.079.
“I lost my first two races so I wasn’t going to lose this one. There was no way on earth I
was going to lose this race,” Stuedemann said. “I was sitting up in the chair thinking about
how bad it felt to lose those first two races. So I knew I had to come out and execute well. I
did and it was a perfect way to comeback after two disappointing results.”
Evan Darm – Marquette, 3200-Meter Run - Darm held off a hard charging Mike DeRenzo
of Wheaton Academy to equal what Mary Ellen Spika accomplished for the Crusaders on
the girls side by winning the long distance event. His time of 9:51.918 was a hair better
than DeRenzo’s 9:52.24. Stephen Clark of Sandwich checked in third at 10:01.652.
Ace McCarty – Genoa-Kingston, High Jump - The Cogs got their second championship
from the 6’5” McCarty who captured the high jump crown with a leap of 6’02.00”. Steven
Voris checked in right behind jumping 6’00.00”. Bill Wessinger of H-BR was third at 5’
10.00”.
“Even though my winning jump wasn’t that great, a win’s a win I guess and I’ll take it. I was
really pumped and had a lot of adrenaline flowing after we got second in the 4 by 200
relay,” McCarty said. “I came back after that and cleared six foot and then six two and that
seemed to put a lot of pressure on the Indian Creek kid (Voris). It wasn’t my best but I was
glad to win here.”
Boys Team Results
It came down to the final race of the night as Genoa-Kingston needed to beat Sandwich in
the 1600-meter relay in order to insure they’d end up on top of the final scoreboard.
Even though the Cogs ultimately finished third in the 1600 behind Beecher and Manteno,
they were four plus seconds better than the Indians with a time of 3:40.133 to 3:44.988.
As a result, Genoa-Kingston became the 2010 Seneca Irish Invitation Boys Champions
with 88.00 points. Sandwich was second garnering 79.50, while Seneca checked in third
with 67.00.
Other area finishes were Plano (6th, 58.50), Marquette (7th, 50.00), Indian Creek (11th,
39.00), H-BR (14th, 12.00), and Serena (16th, 1.00).
“We showed a lot of fortitude on the track tonight in winning this championship. Obviously
we got the two field wins, but we got a great mix of kids that helped us on the track,” said
Genoa-Kingston boys coach Phil Jerbi. “We had seniors that did great things and we had
freshman that were phenomenal. It was a huge team effort by everyone involved and I
couldn’t be prouder of this group and this championship.”
Girls Team Championship
Kankakee Bishop McNamara ran away with an easy team win. Bishop Mac easily bested
second place Plano 138.00 to 82.00. Sandwich was third at 73.00.
Other area finishes were Genoa-Kingston (4th, 71.00), Seneca (5th, 66.00), Marquette
(8th, 38.00), Indian Creek (13th, 17.00), Hinckley-Big Rock (14th, 10.00), and Serena
(16th, 2.00).
