SHABBONA -
In the previous 2010 regular season meetings between Somonauk and
Earlville-Leland, the Lady Bobcats thoroughly dominated both contests by a combined 25-
8.

So when the two clubs got together again Tuesday afternoon at the Indian Creek Class
1A Regional semifinal in Shabbona, some might have assumed there would be another
lopsided score in favor of Somonauk.

That would have been a very wrong assumption on this day.

Despite a magnificent pitching performance by freshman Jessica Schultz, the No. 1 seed
Lady Bobcats could scratch out only one unearned run in the third inning and had to hold
on for a 1-0 victory over the very game and upset-minded No. 4 seed Lady Raiders.

Somonauk (22-6) narrowly moves on to Saturday’s 11 a.m. Regional Championship
contest at Indian Creek against the winner of today’s contest in Shabbona between No. 2
Indian Creek and No. 3 Amboy.

Schultz (21-4) was practically unhittable, surrendering only one double on the afternoon
while striking out a season-high 16 batters and walking only two. She also hit two
batsmen, but only one of her offerings was hit into the Somonauk outfield throughout the
contest.

Schultz remarkable performance proved to be a blessing for the Lady Bobcats
considering the lack of run support and the hard-nosed play of the underdog Lady
Raiders.

“I expected us to hit better obviously, but give Earlville-Leland credit. They came to play.
Their girls were loose and their defense played great,” said Somonauk co-head coach
Darvil Hayes. “Our pitcher (Schultz) was fantastic. You can’t ask any more than that from
a freshman pitcher in her first regional game with only one run on the board behind her.
We kept looking at that one run on the scoreboard and thought anything can happen at
this point. But she was able to shut them down when she needed to. She was bringing it.”

“She (Schultz) pitched an amazing game. She kept us off balance and our girls were
reaching or we were behind most of the time,” said Earlville-Leland coach Shannon Cook.
“She’s a good little pitcher. She really, really is. But we stayed with them today.
Unfortunately we couldn’t put the ball in play to score any runs.”

The only tally of the contest came in the bottom of the third inning when the Lady Bobcats
touched Earlville-Leland’s starting pitcher Torie Dumke with an unearned run.

With one out, Jordan Smith doubled to left-center field. Hillary Paull then legged out an
infield hit, while Smith moved to third. She’d come home on an error as the Lady Raiders
tried to make a play on Paull at first, but the throw was wild, which is what all Somonauk
would need on the scoreboard.

Schultz gave up the only Earlville-Leland hit in the top of the sixth when Jessica Miller led
off with a booming double to centerfield. That only served to motivate Schultz from there
as she struck out the final six Lady Raider hitters to close out her complete game
masterpiece.

“The only pressure I really had today was when she (Miller) doubled to center. Then I got
really angry,” Schultz said. “From there, I got the mind set that I wasn’t going to let anyone
hit the ball from there on out during the last two innings. I was pretty proud of my effort
and I’m looking forward to pitching in regional championship game on Saturday.”

Dumke (8-12) took the hard luck loss for Earlville-Leland (8-16) pitching a very strong six
innings allowing only one unearned run on five hits with six walks and one strikeout.
