STREATOR (Apr. 13) - Twenty-three hits. Seventeen runs. Two home runs. One grand
slam on top of that.
There were many chinks heard at the Streator softball diamond in the big NCIC Reagan
Division match between Streator and Sterling. Among the many, Lindsay Schmitz had the
best one of them all. She towered a ball over the left field fence while three Bulldog
baserunners also made their way home. The hit put the Bulldogs ahead for good, and
they held on to win 10-7. The loss was Sterling's first of the season, and the win by the
Bulldogs was one day after falling at home to Normal.
Leading 5-2 heading into the third, Molly Muntz singled to left field with one out, and Katie
Martin then followed by reaching base on a bean. Payton Billups walked to load the bases
for Schmitz. Streator's No. 2 hitter smacked a 0-1 pitch from Sterling pitcher Jaime
Rehmert to break out of a hitting slump.
The hit capped off an explosive start from the Bulldogs, something which had been
dogging them all year. They had three hits and scored two runs in the first inning with an
RBI single by Allie Riordan and a outfield hit by Sam Riss that got through the legs of
Sterling right fielder Cassidy Gillihan.
“We made solid contact today. Right from the start, from the first inning, so that's nice to
see," said Streator coach Kelly Coons. "In the past it's taken us an inning to get through
the order and then we'd start warming up. It was nice to see them start off right away with
some hits.”
Whether or not a change in the pitching distance being a reason for the frequent contact
remains to be seen; it wasn't a great factor compared to trying to pick up the batted balls.
Sterling's defense had difficulty scooping up three hard ground balls, with two such
occasions in the second inning. With the score tied at 2-2 after one-and-one-half innings
of play, Muntz led off and reached base by hitting a hard grounder through Warrior
shortstop Stephanie Kester's legs. Two successful bunts by Martin and Billups followed
before Schmitz came up and gave Kester some more difficulty by dropping her throw to
first. The error brought in Muntz to give the Bulldogs (11-3, 3-1 NCIC Reagan) the lead for
good.
“I was really, really disappointed with our defense,” Sterling coach Rick Henderson said.
“We didn't step off the bus ready to play defense. I thought we had a decent infield
(practice) before the game, I thought we were focused. But we gave them some runs, and
you cannot give a good team runs.”
Riordan brought in Martin with a single and Sam Riss brought in Billups with a fielder's
choice, where the force-out at home was unsuccessful.
“We really wanted to be aggressive today,” Coons said.
Sterling's (10-1, 2-1) bats showed their might throughout the game, too. Ashli King led off
the second inning with a home run over the right field fence to put her team on the board.
Lauren Schneiderbauer hit a one-out home run over the center field fence in the third
inning.
Kester followed King's home run with a triple to center. She advanced there as a result of
a scary moment between Bulldog left fielder Erin Harcar and Billups at center field. Harcar
collided into the steel fence trying to avoid Billups' call-off of the fly ball. Harcar was lying
down for a few minutes before being motored off of the field. She cut open her left knee
and twisted her right ankle as a result, and will require stitches.
The Golden Warriors chipped away at the lead as the game went on, bringing it to 10-6
into the seventh inning. Angie Minnick singled to lead off the seventh and was brought
home with a one-out double by Kester. Rehmert singled to make Mackenzie Staples the
tying run. Streator pitcher Murphi Armstrong, working a complete game, struck out Staples
and forced Linsey Delgado to ground out to end the game.
“They showed some character by not giving up and continuing to play,” said Henderson.
“I'm really proud of my catcher (King) for keeping her team in the game mentally. I think
they all need to rise to her intensity, and we'll be alright.”
Both pitchers threw over 100 pitches for the game. Armstrong struck out four, walked two
and gave up seven hits in upping her record to 6-2 on the year. Rehmert struck out five
and also walked two in throwing a complete game.
“Murphi looked pretty good,” said Coons. “She hit most of her spots. She's really coming
along as the season goes. She's mixing up her pitches well.”
Streator will travel to Morris on Thursday in Reagan Division action, while Sterling will look
to rebound that same day at Dixon.
“It wasn't a typical game that Sterling and Streator play, that's for sure,” Henderson said.
“But give both teams credit. Both teams have some real good hitters up and down the
lineup.”
