EAST MOLINE (May 8) -
Girls team sports in the Western Big 6 Conference has been
dominated by one school – that being Moline.

In the final date of the Big 6 softball calendar, United Township had an opportunity to
dethrone the Maroons. They needed to sweep Alleman in Saturday's doubleheader to do
so, and they did just that. The Panthers won 6-5 and 7-4 to claim its first conference
championship since 2003.

After winning a close game one, the Panthers (20-4, 9-1 WB6) had little trouble scoring
runs in game two – the game that was needed to win the championship outright – going
up 7-0 at one point.

“It's very exciting because we don't have to share it with Moline,”said UT pitcher Jaime
Coultas, who pitched the entire second game.

Coultas was dominant in the first six innings of work, striking out four and scattering three
hits. While she was at work, the Panther batters rocked Alleman pitcher Jade Swinehart
for 11 hits in six innings.

With two outs in the second inning of game two, Swinehart walked Lizzy Goebel and
Shannon Ballgeer consecutively before No. 9 hitter Peyton Geeting hit an infield single.
The bases were loaded for leadoff hitter Erin Walker, who slapped the first pitch she saw
from Swinehart into left field to clear the bases and lead 3-0.

Swinehart gave up a bases-loaded walk to Courtney Ledezma in the fourth inning to give
UT a 4-0 lead. Brooke Prior led off the fifth inning with a single to left field and advanced
to second on a similar single from Goebel. Ballgeer came up next and hit yet another ball
into left field; this time it was a bases-clearing double that gave her team a 6-0 lead.

“The second game I just had to wait on the ball,” said Prior, who went 5-for-7 on the
afternoon. “I just kept making contact.”

Coultas knocked home a run of her own in the sixth with a two-out single to right field.
After that, things on the mound were not as easy. Coultas retired two of the first three
batters before the Pioneers (12-14, 6-4) tried to set up a comeback.

“I was confident,” Coultas said. “I did not want anybody to hit the ball, but I'm glad I had my
defense behind me.”

Ashley Schwenneker hit an infield single toward third base, and was brought home by an
Ashley Friedeland double to left field. Friedeland was brought home on the next at-bat by
Hayley Johnson, who doubled to center field. Coultas got Maddie McGuire to ground out
to third in the next at-bat to conclude the series and celebrate a conference championship.

“They don't share very well,” UT coach John Alonzo said about his team. “Nobody's won
the conference (except Moline) since '03, since we last done it. This is very big for us.”

The first game was closer than the second. The Panthers came at bat in the final inning of
regulation down 5-3. Alleman pitcher Erica Langeson gave up three straight singles to
Ledezma, Hayley Krack and Prior before Coultas reached on a 6-4 fielder's choice to
bring in Ledezma and inch closer at 5-4. Charlotte Park reached on another fielder's
choice to bring in Krack and tie the game at five.

After Langeson struck out Goebel and hit Geeting with a pitch, Walker hit a grounder to
Schwenneker at shortstop. Schwenneker tried to force out Geeting at second, but the
catch was misplayed by second baseman Andria Mendoza to end the game.

“We were trying to keep them upbeat,” Alonzo said. “We left runners in scoring position in
every inning except once. We knew we could do well, and we just needed people to come
through with a couple of base hits.”

The Panthers scored first in the opening inning when Prior hit a ground rule double to
center field to bring home Kelsey Winter.

Alleman then came back to put up three runs off Ledezma, who started game one for UT.
Ally Braet hit a one-out double to center field to bring in courtesy runner Melissa Walkup.
Mendoza hit a two-out single that landed on the edge of the grass north of third base to
bring in Katie Polit. Braet was brought home when a batted ball from Schwenneker was
misplayed by Ledezma.

“We played hard, we just didn't get it done,” Alleman coach Mike Ebner said. “We pushed
them farther than anybody thought they were going to be pushed. We can walk off the
field with our heads held high.”

Coultas had an RBI single and a sacrifice bunt from Park tied the game at three in the
third inning.

Walker and Callas combined for seven RBI in the series. Friedeland, Johnson and Braet
combined for six RBI for Alleman in the series.

Ledezma went the distance in the first game, striking out six and walking two in throwing
strikes two-to-one. Langeson struck out two and walked three in the loss.

The two teams will face each other in a non-conference game next week. Alleman has one
more week left in their regular season, while UT has two more weeks. Both teams will
compete at the Harlem Invitational next Saturday along with area teams Belvidere North,
Hononegah and Harlem.

“It feels amazing, it really does,” said Prior about the conference championship. “Being a
freshman, my first year being here, it feels great.”

NOTES: Alleman, too, had an opportunity to win the conference championship outright;
however they needed help from Quincy in their twinbill with Moline. Both games were 10-0
run-rule decisions in favor of the Maroons (19-7, 8-2) ... After their games, the Moline
team stopped by to see part of this game ... Both UT and Alleman wore pink as they took
part of a breast cancer fundraiser. Names of those affected with breast cancer were
honored, and balloons were sent off by both teams in the pitcher's circle.
