On Monday, or Tuesday, or even Wednesday, over 1,500 baseball prospects througout
America will be eagerly anticipating the most important call of their careers.
The 46th Annual Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft will be held during these
days. First-round picks and first-round compensation picks will be held on Monday.
Monday's picks begin at 6:00 p.m. area time and will be broadcast on MLB.com and on
the MLB television Network. The draft for rounds 2-30 will take place on Tuesday at 11:00
a.m. area time, with rounds 31-50 taking place also at 11:00.
For the second year in a row, the Washington Nationals have the first choice in this year's
draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the second choice, followed by the: Baltimore Orioles,
Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, Houston
Astros, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinatti Reds, Chicago
White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Los
Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Astros again, Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Texas
Rangers, Florida Marlins, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Colorado Rockies,
Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, the Angels twice more, the Rays again, and
finally the New York Yankees.
There will be 19 additional “sandwich” picks to follow. That order will begin with the Astros,
followed by the: Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves, Red Sox, Angels, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Angels,
Blue Jays, Rays, Mariners, Tigers, Rangers, Cardinals, Rockies, Rays, Tigers, Rangers
and Cardinals.
Rounds 2-50 will follow in the same order as round one.
The top three prospects, according to published reports, are catcher Bryce Harper of the
College of Southern Nevada, shortstop Manny Machado of Brito (Fla.) High School, and
right-handed pitcher Jameson Tallion of The Woodlands (Tex.) High School.
Minooka right-handed pitcher Michael Foltynewicz is expected to go high in the draft.
According to MLB.com's scouting report, “the breaking ball needs some work but should
be fine with more instruction. While it's typically been the prep arms from the warm-
weather areas who go first, Foltynewicz is positioning himself to be one of the first from
the Midwest to go off the board.”
No Illinois prep draft hopeful has been drafted in the top 30 since the White Sox drafted
New Lenox Providence alum Kris Honel in 2001. There have only been two first-round
sandwich picks that have come straight from Illinois high schools in the past decade:
Waubonsie Valley's Michael Bowden (2005, 47th overall) and Highland's Jacob Ordozzi
(2008, 32nd overall).
There are three area high school athletes, all right-handed pitchers, hoping to get the
call: Harlem's Jake Lieske, Guilford's Cyrus Wimberly, and Hononegah's Ryan Scarpetta.
Scarpetta is hoping to the the fourth person of his family to be drafted. His older brother
Brett was drafted by the White Sox in 2004, cousin Cody was drafted by the Brewers in
2007, and uncle Dan was drafted by the Brewers in 1979.
The three area pitchers have plenty of time to await the call. There are some who have to
concentrate on winning a ballgame on Monday. Foltynewicz's Indians may end up playing
two games on Monday. They will play in the Sectional championship game against
O'Fallon at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. The winner of that game will face
Naperville Central in the IWU-held Class 4A Supersectional contest soon afterward.
Fellow draft hopefuls center fielder Mark Payton of Chicago St. Rita and Tinley Park
Andrew first baseman Jeffery Zimmerman will face each other in the Class 4A Standard
Bank Stadium Supersectional on Monday.
In the few days after his team lost in the Class 2A State Championship game to Teutopolis
on Saturday, Harrisburg shortstop/pitcher Reid Roper will also await his draft calling.
Other Illinois prep draft hopefuls include: Jake DePew (catcher, Granite City), Chad Green
(right-handed pitcher, Effingham), Ryan Hartman (right-handed pitcher, Mt. Zion), Michael
Hollenbeck (catcher, Joliet), Jeffery Jackson (catcher, Wauconda), Eric Jagielo (shortstop,
Downers Grove North), Kevin Koziol (first baseman, Chicago Brother Rice), Kendall
Radcliffe (center fielder, Chicago Morgan Park), Connor Sadzeck (right-handed pitcher,
Crystal Lake Central), Donald Snelten (left-handed pitcher, Lake Villa Lakes) and Brock
Steward (shortstop, Normal West).
