The Northern Illinois Sports Beat coverage area is still feeling the effect of the economic
recession.

The Illinois High School Association released high school enrollment totals for its member
schools for the 2010-11 school year on Wednesday. This comes after the Illinois State
Board of Education released its enrollment numbers from the 20009-10 Fall Housing
Report earlier this week.

Total area enrollment fell from 58,683 to 56,610, a decrease of 2,073 students (roughly
3.5%) from September 30, 2008 to September 30, 2009.

Serena High School had the area's largest decline in enrollment at nearly 22%,
decreasing 61 students to 212. Milledgeville also had a 20% loss in enrollment,
decreasing 31 students to 126. Other schools that saw enrollment drop by more than 10%
include Fulton Unity (64 to 52), LaMoille (89 to 80), Rockford Lutheran (431 to 371),
Newman (284 to 245), Rockford Christian Life (285 to 253) and Durand (233 to 200).

Warren High School has the area's largest increase in enrollment at nearly 22%,
increasing 30 students to 169. Erie High School also grew by more than 20%, increasing
41 students to 241. Rockford Christian was the only area private school to grow in
enrollment, increasing by 10% to 384.

Different results were posted for the area's two largest growing schools. Plano High
School, after years of increased enrollment, was down 27 students from 643 to 616.
Kaneland High School continued its enrollment upswing, increasing 64 students from
1,229 to 1,293. Belvidere North High School, three years removed from having a full slate
of four grades, increased 17 students from 1,527 to 1,544.

Two of the area's notable shrinking schools saw enrollment declines. Forreston High
School, after falling by 51 students last year, fell another 21 students this year to 276.
Ottawa Township High School, after falling by 40 students last year, fell by another 83
students this year to 1,479.

Northern Illinois Sports Beat started keeping track of school enrollment trends in 2006.
Milledgeville's enrollment has decreased by nearly 30% since 2006, the largest such
change in that time span. Both Kaneland, Plano and Rockford Auburn's enrollments are
up 20% from 2006. Ohio, the smallest school in the coverage area, is down 28% since
2006. Earlville's enrollment is down 25% since 2006. Forreston and Rockford Christian
Life are both down 23% since 2006, while Stockton and Orangeville are down 20%.

Also posting more than 10% losses since 2006 were: Bureau Valley, Dixon, Durand, Hall,
Hinckley-Big Rock, Indian Creek, Lena-Winslow, Morrison, Oregon, Ottawa, Polo,
Riverdale, River Ridge, Rock Falls, Scales Mound, Serena, and West Carroll.

Also posting more than 10% increases since 2006 were: Annawan, Hononegah, IVC,
Pecatonica and Rockford Christian, as well as the total Belvidere high school enrollment.

There are six conferences in the coverage area which are considered “all-inclusive,”
meaning every school in that conference is in the coverage area. The Northern Illinois Big
12 East and the NIC-10 posted enrollment gains as a conference or division. The NIB-12
East has a total enrollment increase of 187. The NIC-10 increased 303 students.

The NIB-12 West has a total enrollment decrease of 150.  The Northwest Upstate Illini fell
110 students. The Little 10 fell 112 students.  The NCIC fell 56 students. The Three
Rivers fell by only six students.

Since 1995, the NIC-10 has increased by over 2,000 students. Genoa-Kingston, North
Boone, Marengo, Sandwich and Stillman Valley have all increased by nearly 200 students
since 1995, while Kewanee and UT have lost nearly 200 students.
