When it comes to hard work and dedicating paying off on the basketball court, nearly
everyone that shines has done that.

However, perhaps not as hard as the specific work that Rockford Lutheran senior Amy
Wieting has put in during the four years she has been a part of the Lady Crusader girls
basketball program.

Wieting battled through banged up knees and torn ACLs during her first two years as a
Lady Crusader. Just when one was healed, something else happened. For two years,
Wieting was on the sideline trying to heal her wounds.

Then last year, things got better and she finally started to play for the Lady Crusaders. She
saw a 22-7 season during her freshman year and a 25-4 season her sophomore year.
Then she played in the paint starting with her junior year and helped lead her team to 29
straight wins before a loss to Quincy Notre Dame in the Class 2A supersectional.

This year's Lutheran team is 20-7 and has already clinched first place in the Big Northern
West Division standings (10-0). Lutheran has a first-place finish at the Oregon Tip-Off
Tournament, a fourth-place showing at the Dixon Christmas Tournament, and helped lead
her team through a challenging large-school field at the Sterling Shootout in December.
Wieting has given Lutheran an average of 10 points and 11 rebounds per game with her
play in the paint.

All of the work has paid off in regards to the future, as she will be playing basketball for the
Green Knights at St. Norbert College, a Division-III school in DePere, Wisc.

CC: What do you like and enjoy about basketball?
AW:
I just love the team connection of it all. Just playing on the court with your four best
friends. It's like a release from all of the stress in life.

CC: How did you first get involved in basketball?
AW:
I have two brothers, my older one and my younger one, and my dad was always an
athlete, and the same with my mom. From a young age I played with the boys, and I played
with my parents. They just raised me up when I was probably in first grade or kindergarten.

CC: If you could single out one moment from your high school career to date that
you're most proud of, what do you think that would be?
AW:
I'd have to say when we went to supers last year. We were 29-0, and although we lost
in the supersectional, it was like the funnest time of my life. I can't even explain that moment.

CC: What are your goals for this season, both personal and team?
AW:
Personally, I want to try to get all-conference and I want to average a double-double.
Then team-wise, we want to take steps toward winning conference (already accomplished)
and the regionals and sectionals, and finally that last step to get to state.

CC: What do you think is the toughest opponent, team or player, you've had to go
up against in your high school career?
AW:
I'd have to say Quincy Notre Dame. They're a powerhouse, every person's a threat.
They were tough and they were a good team.

CC: Describe your role on this team.
AW:
I try to be the encourager. I try to pick people up. I really want to get everyone
involved, as it's not just a one-man sport.

CC: What made you decide on St. Norbert?
AW:
I just really liked the team, the coach (Connie Tilley) and just the school in general. It's
like a real family atmosphere.

CC: What's been the best advice given to you?
AW:
“If tomorrow you couldn't play, how hard would you play today?” Basically, anything
can happen. I know that from personal experience because I didn't play my first two years
with knee injuries. You just got to leave it all on the floor and work hard, because you can
never get anything back. You got to live in the present.

CC: Finish this sentence about yourself: In my spare time, when I'm not doing
anything basketball-related, I am ...
AW:
I'm probably hanging with my friends, going to see a movie, and do some crazy-fun
teenage stuff.

CC: If there was one rule in basketball you would like to see changed, what do you
think it would be?
AW:
I would have to say ... One I don't like?

CC: Traveling? Illegal screens?
AW:
I like those (illegal screens), when they call those. Those are good. I don't know, I'm
pretty content with what it is. When they're against me I get mad, but when they're against
the other team I can't really change anything.

CC: That's a good answer.
AW:
Oooo ... yeah, I figured it out! On a free throw, you have to wait until it hits the rim. I
want to (run) right when it gets gets off the palm.
