PRINCETON – The members of Hall's girls basketball team will never forget this day.
Neither will St. Bede coach Tom McGunnigal.
St. Bede had Hall on the ropes by halftime of Thursday's IHSA Class 2A Princeton
Regional championship game. The Lady Bruins led 26-18 at the intermission, forced 15
Red Devil turnovers, and startled them enough at the free-throw line for a dismal 2-for-10
showing into the third quarter.
“We got down eight, and could have folded,” Hall coach Dave Kain said.
But not the Red Devils, who clamped down defensively and held the Lady Bruins to just
four points in the third quarter. Hall would ride that momentum to a 52-48 championship
win, avenging a loss from Jan. 10.
Be it the rebounding prowess of Kelle Nett, the comeback effort of Liz Mosbach, and the
overall play of fellow starters Brenna Faletti, Jaclyn Kain and Becca Herrmann, a complete
team effort was needed to pull off an upset. Hall was seeded No. 3 in the regional, and St.
Bede came in as the top seed.
Nett led all scorers with 16 points on 3-of-8 shooting, and was efficient from the charity
stripe with a 7-for-10 showing. She even added a three-pointer with 3:42 left in the third
quarter to give her team the lead for the first time since early in the opening quarter.
However, Nett's effort on the glass stood out most of all: 14 defensive rebounds and eight
offensive rebounds, including eight boards in the critical third quarter.
“It's amazing, especially since they're our big rival,” Nett said. “They always have been a
big rival. We lost to them by quite a bit earlier in the season, so we wanted to come back
and wanted to play how we know we can.”
“She played so hard and so aggressive,” Jaclyn Kain said of Nett. “She did an awesome
job boxing out and taking over the boards, offensively and defensively. We're all so proud
of her. She's the best rebounder I know.”
Mosbach is getting back into form after missing some time last month due to an
appendectomy. She had 13 points and three steals to help in the winning effort.
“Last time we played St. Bede I had my appendix taken out and I didn't even get to play.
So basically this was coming back for revenge,” Mosbach said. “It just feels great,
especially since it's St. Bede, since they're our cross-town rivals. They beat us by 20 last
time, so we were the underdog literally. It's a regional, and five years ago it was against
St. Bede at Princeton, and we beat them again. Words can't even describe when the
buzzer went off. I was like 'oh my gosh, we finally did it.'”
St. Bede used a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to establish an 11-8 lead after one quarter
of play. The Lady Bruin lead increased to as much as nine points, and settled on eight at
the intermission.
The Red Devils (19-11) then startled the Lady Bruin offense enough in the third quarter
to make them shoot an ice-cold 1-of-11 from the field.
But that's not what made McGunnigal lose sleep over the game. What dominated his mind
after the game, pacing back and forth in the locker room, was that he felt his team was
getting the wrong end of the whistles.
Hall attempted 36 free throws throughout the game, and while the Red Devils only made
15 of them the bad breaks were enough to derail the Lady Bruin momentum and send the
Red Devils to its first regional title since
After committing just five fouls in the first quarter, the Lady Bruins were whistled for 18
fouls in the second half. All but five of the 23 fouls came while a shot was being attempted.
“That was blatantly lopsided,” McGunnigal said. “It was unfair out there. Our girls got
intimidated, but it was unfair. Thirty-six free throws to 14 free throws. Now we were fouling
at the end, no doubt about it. When you're not playing basketball, and you're not allowed
to play basketball, it's not right. A regional championship game should be decided on the
floor by the players.”
Down 28-20 after three minutes into the third quarter, Herrman, Mosbach and Kain made
buckets in succession, and was followed by Nett's three-pointer from the top-left arc for a
9-0 run and a 29-28 lead. Mosbach's points came off of a steal, and the three other
buckets came off dishes from Faletti. Kayla McDavitt's bucket for St. Bede stopped the
run, but the foul parade began to take shape.
In the last two minutes of the third quarter, Hall was sent to the line four times and made
three of eight attempts. With a minute left, Hall was already in the bonus with nine minutes
left to play in what now became a close game.
Fouls continued to pour in and Hall was sent to the line ten times during the fourth
quarter. In the first three quarters, the Red Devils combined for three free throw makes on
14 attempts. With the game on the line, Hall improved to a 10-of-20 mark during the final
quarter.
“We started making shots,” Mosbach said. “We knew it was going to come down to the
bitter end. We weren't going to give up this time. It was going to come down to the free
throws. In the locker room (at half) we were talking about, 'we need to make our free
throws.' The first couple of times I was up at the free-throw line I wasn't making them, but I
just knew I had to relax because it was going to come down to them.”
The Lady Bruins was get as close as 48-46 with 1:05 left after Lydia Stariha's three-
pointer off the top-left arc, but Hall iced the game with a 5-of-10 mark from the line.
“We got guts,” McGunnigal said. “This team's got heart. They've got heart all along.
They've gone through hard practices. They've gone through long seasons, and gone
through it together. We never stopped believing late and thought we were going to get it.”
Kain also had a strong day for Hall, scoring 13 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
The Red Devils will advance to the Rock Falls Sectional tournament, where they will meet
Stillman Valley, the winner of Oregon's regional, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Tabor
Gymnasium.
“All year I've been telling them, 'mentality, mentality,'” coach Kain said. “We finally got it
about four games ago, tough mentality, and fought through it. I thought we could win, and
it came true. It was tougher than what I thought it would be.”
St. Bede, meanwhile, will try to advance itself away from a nightmare of a second half.
“It sucks that it has to end for this group of girls,” McGunnigal said.
