SHABBONA – Year in year out there isn’t a
better rivalry on the varsity girls basketball
floor than that between Hinckley-Big Rock
and Newark.
Friday night at the Indian Creek Class 1A
Regional championship game in Shabbona,
the top-seeded Lady Royals and the No. 2-
seeded Lady Norsemen reminded all in
attendance of the rich history both clubs
have competing against one another by
providing another scintillating contest that
went the way of H-BR once again as the
Lady Royals came away with a breathtaking
47-43 decision.

Through a slew of tooth and nail battles throughout the past four seasons, the Lady Royals
have found a way to stand victorious against Newark each and every time lately.
Not since December of 2008 have the Lady Royals lost to Newark and the regional title win
this time around just added to overall long term frustration the Lady Royals have put forth
on Newark.
Leading 37-31 with under six minutes to play, H-BR (22-7) embarked on a 16-6 run to close
out the ballgame, wilting the Lady Norsemen down the stretch and ending its 12-game
winning streak and its’ 24-6 overall season record.
The all-important fourth quarter saw four lead changes in which the Lady Norsemen owned
a 43-42 lead with 1:50 to play after Lauren Tollefson’s reverse lay up.
But H-BR went ahead 45-43 and Kelsey Patrick’s lay up try with four seconds left on the
clock rolled tantalizingly off the rim into the hands of all-stater Kaitlin Phillips who was
fouled and followed with two free throws to end the prodigious proceedings.
Phillips tallied 21 points to pace H-BR, while Tollefson led all scorers in the game with 22.
“We got off to a really good start and Newark made a great run at us and that’s just the way
these games have gone after the million times we’ve played them over the recent years,”
said H-BR coach Greg Burks. “It was another one of those back and fourth games between
us and we were fortunate again to get the win. If there is a better rivalry in small school girls
basketball than Hinckley-Big Rock and Newark, I’d like to know what it is. Tonight again, it
wasn’t better short of amazing and both schools should be proud of the efforts on the court.”
“We had a nice six-point lead in the fourth quarter and we missed a lay up and then threw
one away. Instead of being eight or ten points up, we were only up two before we knew it,”
said Newark coach Dale Skelton. “I think over the years with Hinckley we’ve had some great
match ups and they’ve had superior talent. We haven’t beaten them in awhile, but we’ve
done justice to our program competing in some pretty tough ball games just like tonight.
Tonight’s game was just another in the long line of great contests between our two clubs
during the past five or six years.”
H-BR led 11-4 after one quarter as it forced Newark into nine early turnovers that resulted
in ten points from Phillips that came after four steals.
But the Lady Norsemen countered with a 19-9 run in the second stanza. Trailing by ten with
three minutes to play in the half, Newark responded by going ahead 23-20 at the
intermission as Tollefson tallied ten points to give her team a three point lead at the break.
“We knew we weren’t going to let that slow start in the first quarter kill us,” Tollefson said.
“We stepped it up and grabbed the lead back at the half.”
Newark increased the lead to 35-31 entering the final eight minutes of play before H-BR
came alive behind the strong play of senior post Katie Hollis who sat out most of the third
quarter with four fouls.
“It was very frustrating sitting things out and not being able to play most of the third
quarter,” Hollis said. “But I came back in the fourth period and got things done.”
Hollis notched seven of her ten points in the final frame that ultimately sparked the Lady
Royals late game surge before Phillips closed things out with three of four free throws late.
H-BR moves on to the sectional round for the sixth consecutive season, where they will
take on top-ranked Annawan in Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. Varna Midland Sectional semifinal.
