The Good Stuff
Top 10 State Championship Efforts, Top Five State Football Championship Efforts, Top
Five Schools of the Decade, Top Five Coaches of the Decade, and the Top Athletes of
the Decade
With an area as large as the Northern Illinois Sports Beat coverage area, it is impossible
to put together a fixated list of the top this and that. The problem lies on what number to
come up with. True fans of high school sports in the area can pretty much figure out who
the best teams were.
The problem with lists is that we often think more about who didn't make it than who did.
There are a couple of ways to combat this problem. One is to come up with as many
teams as possible. The second is to name just one. We did this with naming the NISB
area's athletes of the decade.
We have put together a list of athletes of the decade for each sport. It seems weird to do
so because we're leaving out thousands of good athletes. So it came down to which
decision wouldn't hurt as bad. Naming one athlete per sport was what we did. If a sport is
played by both genders, we named one per gender.
An athlete could only be named once, and there were no limit as to how many times a
school could be represented on the list. Most athletes on here achieved some sort of
state tournament success, and have excelled in college sports and even worldwide.
It was tough, but we eventually did narrow it down.
High school sports is about the kids. Ask any coach, administrator and parent. However,
we would be remissed if we didn't recognized those who helped make the athlete
successes possible.
In addition to naming the top athletes in each sport, we came up with the top five coaches
of the decade, as well as the top five schools of the decade. The number of schools and
coaches is less than the number of athletes, so it was easier to form a top five list.
Compiling a list for coaches is pretty easy, because all one has to do is look at state
tournament results. However, some factors to consider is wins and losses, longevity and
reception.
The list of schools is tougher, even though there are less than 100 of them in the
coverage area. As wit the coaches, all one has to do is look at state tournament results.
Most trophies is always a factor, but there are also certain efforts that are remarkable in
the own right, whether or not it is a big deal for the school in general.
One list we did come up with is a list of the top 10 State Championship efforts. We put
football in it's own list because of the many successes our teams have had in that sport.
We will begin with the top 10 State Championship efforts. Each numbered list will go from
bottom to top.
