| Decade Retrospective Retraction |
EUCLID, Ohio - In my work for Northern Illinois Sports Beat, I strive to do my job as a
journalist with accuracy. Are we always going to be correct? No. It takes very
determined people to stand up and let me know what I’ve made an error in my writing.
Today, March 10, an error was brought to my attention regarding a piece I wrote in
my “Decade Retrospective,” a look back at important moments of the past decade
(2000-2009). In this piece, I wrote about controversial moments of the past decade;
one of which included former Rockford Christian Life head basketball coach Frank
Hood. Earlier in the decade, Hood was investigated by the Illinois High School
Association in regards to recruiting violations.
It has been brought to my attention that the case is still ongoing. Because of this,
what I mentioned in the “Decade Retrospective” is false.
My understanding at the time was that since the judgement of the Circuit Court of
Winnebago County was remanded meant that the decision was reversed and it was a
done deal. That is not the case. My knowledge of the judicial process in regards to
this situation was not accurate.
I used past IHSA website announcements, as well as legal documents posted on the
Internet by the State of Illinois. After conducting the research, I put together the
information about Hood v. Illinois High School Association. I wrote that Hood sued the
IHSA, but lost the case. I then wrote that Hood appealed to the Illinois Second District
Appelate Court, and won the case. I also used the phrase, “It turns out such
recruiting allegations were false.”
Again, my knowledge of the judicial process in regards to this situation was not
accurate.
