Today is Friday, January 29, 2009. This is Week 23 of the high school sports season.
The Boys Bowling State Meet starts today in O'Fallon, and will conclude on Saturday.
Girls Bowling Sectionals are taking place this week, with the State Tournament being held
next week in Rockford. Track and Field practices are already beginning with the indoor
season starting in a couple of weeks.

Boys Bowling State Participants

The 8th Annual IHSA Boys Bowling State Tournament will take place today and tomorrow
at the St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon.

Rockford Guilford and Sycamore won Sectional Meets last weekend.

The Vikings won by 233 pins over NIC-10 rival Belvidere North. The Blue Thunder, by
virtue of their second place finish, also qualified as a team for the State Meet. Guilford
senior Tim Kashmier has the Winnebago Sectional's highest series of 1,458.

Other members of the Viking squad are: junior Nic Aures, senior Matt Clevenger,
sophomore Cory Lenz, junior Colton Magnuson, senior Joe Nelson, senior Ethan Olson
and junior Mike Sharp. Brad Sommer is the head coach. Members of the Blue Thunder
squad are: senior Brock Dvorak, junior Nick Frisella, senior Tim Graf, sophomore Trevor
Graf, freshman James Hildebrandt, senior Jeremy Johannes, junior Keegan Morgan and
junior Josh Rayphole. Michelle Tschumper is the head coach. Also qualifying from the
Winnebago Sectional were Rockford Christian senior Spencer Hockman and Hononegah
junior Bobby Phillips. South Beloit junior Matt Paul is an at-large qualifier.

The Spartans had a much slimmer margin of victory in the LaSalle-Peru Sectional: one
pin. They won 6,330 to 6,329 over Minooka. Sycamore junior Austin Ricker had the area's
highest score with a 1,352 series. Minooka senior Jon Heider had the top score with a
1,386.

Other members of the Spartan squad are: senior Kyle Edwards, senior Ryan Floit,
sophomore Tony O'Donnell, junior Mike Reines, senior Drew Remala, senior Shane Toms
and senior Andy Wallace. Aaron Williams is the head coach. Also qualifying were Oregon
freshman Dan Grimm and Streator senior Jesse Spraggon.

Each State Meet round consists of three games. Each team consists of five bowlers and
total team pinfall per round consists of the sum of the scores of the bowlers. Each team
and individual advancing to the State Meet will bowl two rounds on Friday.  The twelve
highest scoring teams and 30 individuals not a part of an advancing team will advance to
the third round Saturday.  The twelve highest scoring teams and 30 individuals in round
three advance to the final round.

Perfect Round of IHSA Drug Testing

The Illinois High School Association announced on Tuesday that all of the drug tests it
conducted during the Fall state tournaments were perfect. The IHSA conducts random
drug tests on athletes that enter the state series events, having started an initiative last
year. This year's program is aided by State legislation that was signed into law on August
7.

There were no positive test results out of the 141 that were conducted. One-hundred
seventeen athletes were tested for anabolic steroids and 24 were tested for stimulants.

So far, the IHSA has not uncovered a violation of the Drug Policy. There have been a
handful of negative tests that were granted medical waivers, but these tests are
considered “positive” by the IHSA. No such occurrence happened this fall.

The release of the fall statistics comes early. Allegations of questionable test results from
members of Class 8A state football champion Maine South prompted the announcement
of the results.

“We had intended to release the results of our fall drug testing at a later date, but felt
compelled to distribute it immediately to address a proliferation of false and damaging
rumors about the test results of Class 8A football state champion Maine South,” IHSA
Executive Director Marty Hickman stated in a press release. “It is truly unfortunate that
these rumors have persisted. It is our hope that these groundless accusations will not
diminish the outstanding accomplishments of Maine South High School, its football
coaching staff, and its players.”

The winter season's drug testing has begun with the start of the Boys Bowling state series.

Sterling Wrestling Joins 800 Club

A rare group of wrestling teams welcomed one more member to its prestigious club on
Wednesday.

After their 42-26 dual meet road victory over arch rival Dixon, Sterling became a member
of the 800-win club. Less than ten schools are in the club, and the exact number has
never been determined due to lack of record keeping. However, five schools are known to
be in the club.

Granite City has over 1,200 dual meet wins in its history, and is the state's all-time leader.
Harvard is in second place with over 850 wins, DeKalb is in third with over 825 and
Chicago Mount Carmel joined the 800 club earlier this year. Inaugural IHSA champion
Proviso (now Proviso East) is believed to also be in the 800 club.

The Golden Warriors are 17-5 on the season, and will compete in the NCIC Tournament
on Saturday. They have won 26 conference titles dating back to 1952.

The win over Dixon featured another milestone. Sterling coach, and Dixon alum, Charlie
Bishop won his 50th meet of his coaching career. Ironically, Sterling's 700th win came at
Dixon in 2004.

Dixon Boys Basketball Tries For Millenium Club

While Sterling reached a milestone win at Dixon, another Duke program will try for a
milestone of its own.

The boys basketball team came into this week with 997 wins in its history. However, Dixon
has over 1,000 losses in its history. The program dates back to 1919, according to Dixon
athletics' historian Mike Lawton.

Dixon won game No. 998 on Tuesday with a 73-62 win over NCIC Reagan foe Streator.
The win put Dixon's win-loss record at 12-8 and 5-2 in the division.

Coming up next for the Dukes is a road game against Reagan foe Ottawa on Friday. If
they win that game, No. 1,000 can be reached with a win at United Township.

Winkelman to Feature IHSA Bass Fishing Meet on Program

World-renowned outdoorsmen Babe Winkelman was present at the inaugural IHSA Bass
Fishing State Final this past May. Winkelman was the guest speaker at the Meet's fish fry.

He also brought a camera crew to the event. Winkelman is the host of Babe Winkelman's
Good Fishing, a syndicated television show. Footage from the Bass Fishing State Meet
will be featured on the program.

The episode featuring the Meet will air on Saturday, February 6 at 6:30 a.m. (CST) on
Fox Sports Midwest. If one missed the show, a rerun will air on Saturday, April 24 at the
same time.

“Babe Winkelman is a legend in the fishing community and you could tell how much the
students enjoyed hearing him speak at the inaugural bass fishing state finals,” IHSA
Assistant Executive Director  in charge of Bass Fishing Dave Gannaway stated in a press
release. “It meant a lot to everyone that he took the time out of his schedule to be a part
of it and this television program will allow people across the country to see what a special
thing we have going here in Illinois.”

Babe Winkelman's Good Fishing is one of the nation's longest-running outdoors shows,
having first aired in 1985. The show is also shown on the Versus televison network.
