Today is Friday, February 5, 2010. This is Week 24 of the high school sports season.
Girls Bowling Sectionals are taking place this week, with the State Tournament being held
next week in Rockford. Track and Field practices are already beginning with the indoor

week.

Wrestling Regionals This Saturday

In addition to girls bowling, wrestling teams will begin their postseason competition this
weekend. This year will be the second under the three-class system. The top team in
each regional will compete at the team sectional on February 22. Individual regional
winners, second place finishers and third place finishers will advance to sectional
competition on the following Saturday.

Harvard, Newman, Plano and West Carroll will host the area's Class 1A regional meets.
Eureka and Sherrard will host Class 1A regionals with area schools competing. Belvidere,
Rock Island and Yorkville will host the area's Class 2A regional meets. Harlem will host a
Class 3A meet, with the Normal West Sectional also hosting area 3A schools.

Muchmore, Krause Await Milestone Wins

Two area girls basketball coaches came into last week inching closer to milestone wins in
their respective careers. However, their seasons have been rough ones.

Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore tried for his 200th victory for the sixth time on
Tuesday when the Timberwolves took on non-conference foe Illinois Math and Science
Academy. The Timberwolves, who placed fourth in the Little 10 Tournament two weeks
ago, lost five straight games dating back to the Little 10 Tournament semifinals.

The Timberwolves defeated IMSA 42-35 on Thursday night. The win upped their record to
11-15 on the season. They head into Regional play at their home gymnasium on Monday
when they take on fellow Little 10 school Paw Paw.

Muchmore has a career record of 200-165 and led the Timberwolves to a regional
championship in 1998.

Winnebago coach Judy Krause will try for win No. 400 tonight as the Indians take on
Byron. They dropped a 38-31 decision to the Lady Tigers last month. Winnebago is 9-18
on year, but has won six of their last ten games after starting the season 3-14.

Krause coached the Indians from 1986-87 to 1997-98, and returned in the 2001-02
season.

HSA's Hinrichsen Earns NFHS Citation

The National Federation of State High School Associations released its list of honorees
for the 2010 NFHS Citations this week. Among them is IHSA Assistant Executive Director
Sue Hinrichsen.

Hinrichsen, who will retire at the end of the school year, is among this year's 12 nationally
honored individuals.

“It’s a pretty neat honor when you think of all the worthy candidates out there,” stated
Hinrichsen in a press release. “There are so many people who are deserving of this
recognition all throughout the state, and frankly, here within our office at the IHSA. It is
humbling when you think about it in that regard and I accept it on behalf of all of those
people.”

Hinrichsen is the IHSA's administrator for boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls golf,
boys and girls bowling and girls badminton. She also handles equity issues, is in charge
of state final merchandise and is the staff's Title IX liaison. She will be honored at the
NFHS's Summer Meeting in San Diego.

Also honored is the late Ed Thomas of Parkersburg, Iowa. Thomas, a veteran football
coach of Aplington-Parkersburg High School, was killed last summer in a shooting
involving a former player of his. The story made national news.

Cook County Sports Official Suspended by IHSA

The IHSA released a statement on Thursday night regarding the arrest of one of its part-
time sports officials.

Larry Moser, 57, of Arlington Heights, was recently arrested on child pornography
charges. According to by-law 2-A of the IHSA Sports Officials Handbook, a charge of such
results in a suspension of his duties. Conviction of such matters results in the automatic
forfeiture of his  officiating license. If forfeited, he can apply for reapplication of their
license.

“Proper protocol has been followed in this situation,” stated IHSA Executive Director Marty
Hickman in the statement. “The individual who was suspended today had not been
charged with any crimes until Thursday (February 4) and was not a registered sex
offender, nor did he have any previous record. The IHSA has never received any
complaints concerning his conduct while acting as an IHSA official.  He was suspended
immediately after we were alerted by the Cook County Sheriff's Department. We
appreciate the Cook County Sheriff's Department rapid response in communicating this
information to our office and member schools.”
